Where you never know what you’ll find…

Kick-Ass #1

                                                Kick-Ass #1

I’m not going to lie to you, I’m not the biggest fan of John Romita Jr. I find that when he’s at his best, I can tolerate him but when he’s off his game a bit, I really can’t stand reading anything he’s drawing (like World War Hulk). So I have to admit a fair bit of trepidation when I plopped down $3 for this book. Ends up I had nothing to worry about because what I got for my money was one very enjoyable comic.

The story takes place in a world as much like our own as can be. The only superheroes to be found are those talked about in comic books, and since this book is published by Icon, who is owned by Marvel, the comics talked about are ones we know. But don’t let the Marvel connection fool you, this title is for mature audiences only as the blood is flowing free and the censorship is few and far between.

The story centers on David Lizewski, a pretty normal high school student who dreams of being more, of being a super hero. Like I said, he lives a pretty normal life; mother died of an aneurism, father works third shift, and he spends his free time watching porn and reading comics. His life veers from the regular when he decides to buy a wet suit off ebay and ‘change the world’. He begins patrolling the rooftops and lifting weights until he gets his first piece of superhero action when he takes on a group of thugs defacing a building. Suffice it to say it doesn’t go well.

Though the end leaves you wondering about the fate of our hero, the tone of the narration implies that he more than survives, it implies that he actually continues on with the hero business (which if you see his condition at the end of issue #1, you have to doubt it). This really was an entertaining read and well worth keeping an eye on. I recommend scarfing this one up now, while you can, as I foresee this book taking off.
