THE BEST OF THE REST: X-Men: First Class

Posted by lordcomicguy on February 2, 2008

With the majority of the comic world’s attention glued to anything concerning upcoming mega-stories like Secret Invasion and Final Crisis, it’s easy to forget that there are a number of quality titles out there that don’t get the attention they deserve. So with that in mind, welcome to The Best of the Rest where we at The Comic Corner would like to take a minute and talk about some great books out there that tend to fly under the radar. Our goal is to spotlight an issue, mini-series, or ongoing series that catches our eye with its great art, stories, or originality. With that in mind, let’s get started with this month’s book…..

 X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Originally slated as an eight-issue mini-series, this title focusing on the initial exploits of the original X-Men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, Ice Man and the headman himself, Prof. X) was such a hit that it was re-launched into an ongoing, monthly, title. Now why is it deserving of being talked about here…..because, with the continued complexity and positioning prevalent within the rest of the Marvel U., this book comes across as a breath of fresh air.

Unlike most other comics, you will find little blood, negativity, or confusing storylines here. It’s funny, clean, and all the story arcs are self-contained within this book and are usually wrapped up in one issue, two at the most. You never know what you’ll find from issue to issue because Marvel has opened up its whole universe to pick from with regards to guest appearances. (We’ve had Thor, the Invisible Woman, Swamp-Thing, Hulk, and the Lizard so far, to name a few.) The characters in this book are ones we know and have known for quite awhile but behind the writing talents of Jeff Parker, they take life in ways not seen before. The greatest compliment I can give the writing is that they could do a whole issue with the team doing nothing but sitting in an empty room and talking and Parker would find a way to make it interesting, funny, and in the end, touching.

So, in finishing up, if you’re looking for a title that delivers month after month, is chalk full of fun-filled goodness, and you’ll not have to buy ten other titles to complete a story, then X-Men: First Class is the book for you!
