The Boys #17

Posted by lordcomicguy on April 10, 2008

Pull the blinds down, put the kiddies to bed and plop down in your favorite chair ‘cause it’s Mature Reader time with The Boys! Thanks to the deviously delicious writing of Garth Ennis and the solid pencils of Darick Robertson, we have the most enjoyable guilty pleasure read since The Preacher (which was ALSO done by Ennis). In fact, I’ll even say that this book stretches the boundaries of extreme even farther than Preacher did!

In The Boys #17, we are into Part three of the current “Good For The Soul” four-part arc, where the theme of the story is past regrets and new beginnings. Wee Hughie, the Simon Pegg look-alike, is the centerpiece of this arc as he is directed to clean up a little bit of dirty work from an earlier mission, namely re-killing the newly resurrected Blarney Cock. All the while, he begins a relationship with the newest member of The Seven (this worlds Justice League-types), Starlight, though he isn’t aware of her superhuman abilities/identity.

This issue, like the series as a whole, is about the most enjoyable book out there for those not faint of heart. It’s funny and violent yet surprisingly deep and touching at times. Ennis is just one of the more brilliant writers out there today and my favorite by far. There is just this sense of true reality to his writing. Yeah, he has superheroes and extreme situations but there always is consequence for the actions in his books. The heroes may mostly win but it’s most always a victory that takes a bit out of everyone and sticks with the “heroes”. Besides, what other book is going to leave you wondering if a zombie is going to stick a hamster up his arse?

Man arrested for forgetting to pay for pop

CLEVELAND, April 8 (UPI) — A Cleveland man says he was arrested after mistakenly leaving a store without paying for a $4 case of soda among his two cartloads of groceries.

Tom Sturgis said he paid for $157.20 worth of groceries at the self checkout lane of a Brooklyn, Ohio, supermarket and walked out the door not realizing he had forgotten to pay for the soda, which was on the shelf under the cart, WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported Tuesday.

Sturgis said a police officer working security asked to see his receipt.

“I went looking for the receipt, the pop wasn’t on it and they decided to have me arrested,” he said.

“It’s over a case of pop,” said Sturgis’ wife Wendy. “He turned around and offered to go back in and pay for it and the cop told him it’s like robbing a bank, you just can’t get caught robbing a bank and say, ‘I’m sorry, I’ll give you your money back.’”

Sturgis, who was charged with petty theft, spent 3 1/2 hours in jail, from 11:30 p.m. until 3 a.m.
